Description

The LM317Aadjustable 3-terminal, positive-voltage regulatorsarecapableofsupplyingcurrent inexcess of 1.5Aover a 1.25-V to 37-Voutput range and provide 1% output-voltage accuracy. Both line regulation and load regulation are better achieved with the LM317A device than with standard fixed regulators.

TheLM317Aoffers full overloadprotectionsuchas over current, thermal-overloadprotection, andsafe area protection. All overload protection circuitry remains fully functional even if the adjustment terminal isdisconnected.

Typically,nocapacitorsareneededunlessthedevice is situatedmore than6 inches fromthe input filter capacitors, inwhichcaseaninputbypass isneeded. Anoptionaloutputcapacitorcanbeaddedtoimprove transient response and can be replaced with a ceramic and appropriate ESR. The adjustment terminalcanbebypassedtoachieveveryhighripple rejection ratios that are difficult to achieve with standard3-terminal regulators.

BecausetheLM317Aregulator isfloatinganddetects only the input-to-output differential voltage, supplies ofseveralhundredvoltscanberegulatedas longas the maximum input-to-output differential is not exceeded. Exceeding themaximum input-to-output deferentialwill result inshort-circuitingtheoutput.By connectinga fixed resistor between theadjustment pinandoutput, theLM317Acanbealsousedasa precisioncurrentregulator.
